The Union Budget 2026–27 has allocated ₹924.35 crore for the Khelo India programme, reflecting a 32% increase from the revised ₹700 crore provided in the 2025–26 fiscal year. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports headed by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya has received a total of ₹4,479.88 crore, which is an additional ₹1,133 crore compared to the previous year. This increased funding demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to advancing the sports sector and improving its role in driving economic growth.

According to the official government statement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the current Khelo India programme will transition into a 10-year Khelo India Mission.

The revised framework will focus on five key areas: identifying and developing talent, improving coach training, incorporating sports science, expanding competitive leagues, and enhancing sports infrastructure.

As stated in the official government release, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed that the current Khelo India programme will transition into a 10-year Khelo India Mission.

The revised structure will focus on five key areas: identifying and developing talent, improving coach training, incorporating sports science, expanding competitive leagues, and enhancing sports infrastructure.

Manufacturing Focus Creates Market Opportunity

The Ministry aims to boost local production and promote innovation in equipment design and advanced materials under the leadership of Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. This allocation helps address a long-standing issue in India’s sports sector, where domestic manufacturers have traditionally relied on imports for specialized products and materials.

The dedicated funding creates structured entry opportunities for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in precision manufacturing, polymer engineering, and textile technology sectors crucial for producing advanced sports equipment.

The Sports Authority of India has been allocated ₹917.38 crore, an increase of ₹37.38 crore from the previous year, to support national training centers and athlete logistics.

National Sports Federations have received ₹425 crore to enhance their participation in international events and prepare for global competitions.

Business Implications for Equipment Manufacturers

The  official budget documents highlight the initiative’s goal of enhancing India’s role in global sports supply chains by promoting innovation and setting higher quality standards.

Manufacturers can expect policy measures such as production-linked incentives, quality certification frameworks, and research and development collaborations with government-funded sports science facilities.

The National Centre of Sports Science & Research has been allocated ₹15 crore and is expected to support product development by serving as a testing and validation partner.

For B2B suppliers, the expanded training center network under Khelo India creates institutional procurement opportunities across various categories, including protective gear, training aids, monitoring devices, and facility equipment.

The mission’s focus on foundational, intermediate, and elite-level centers suggests varying product specifications and repeated purchasing cycles.

Competitive Positioning and Scale

India is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, with budget assistance for the event increasing from ₹28.05 crore to ₹50 crore. Infrastructure development and tournament hosting will lead to short-term procurement surges, but they also set quality benchmarks that manufacturers must meet.

The government’s goal of positioning India among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036 implies continued investment beyond this budget cycle.

For manufacturers, this means long-term demand visibility, provided they align production capabilities with evolving performance standards.

The Khelo India allocation operates within a budget that is largely focused on revenue generation, with limited capital spending on new infrastructure.

The initial focus will be on optimizing existing facilities and purchasing movable equipment rather than undertaking large-scale construction projects.

Businesses should closely monitor the implementation guidelines for the sports goods manufacturing scheme, as these are expected to outline eligibility criteria, subsidy structures, and technical compliance requirements.

The manufacturing initiative is likely to strengthen the broader  sports & entertainment ecosystem, supporting product manufacturers and verified suppliers across segments such as impact-resistant materials, performance monitoring technologies, and adaptive equipment, while creating structured growth opportunities as the mission scales operations.
