Indian MSMEs Face Growing Expectations for Easier B2B Buying

As digital procurement gains traction among Indian businesses, customer experience is emerging as an important consideration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) seeking to attract and retain B2B buyers.

For many small businesses, sales efforts focus on finding customers, negotiating prices and promoting products. However, buyers also evaluate how easily they can obtain product information, request quotations, place orders, track deliveries and resolve problems. Complicated purchasing processes can discourage customers even when a supplier offers competitive prices.

The shift comes as India’s MSME procurement market increasingly explores digital channels. The Digital Bharat: India Digital Procurement Report 2026, released by the India SME Forum in August, estimated the country’s MSME procurement economy at ₹124.9 trillion. It found that 80.4% of surveyed MSMEs expected digital procurement to play a major role in business expansion over the following three years.

The findings highlight an expanding opportunity for businesses to improve how customers discover, evaluate and purchase products through  e-commerce and digital marketplaces.

Convenience Becomes a Factor in Supplier Selection

B2B purchasing often involves multiple steps, including product comparisons, technical checks, price negotiations, purchase approvals and payment arrangements. When these processes depend entirely on repeated calls, scattered messages or manually prepared documents, buyers may face unnecessary delays.

Digital catalogues, standardised quotations, online order forms and clear product specifications can make these interactions more efficient. Businesses can also provide information about minimum order quantities, delivery timelines, payment terms and product availability upfront.

For MSMEs serving manufacturers, distributors and institutional buyers, these improvements can reduce the time customers spend obtaining basic information and completing routine purchases. Buyers may also consider suppliers’ reliability, flexibility and communication when choosing  long-term business partners.

Digital Procurement Reports Highlight Demand for Convenience

A survey reported by The Tribune on World MSME Day 2026 found that users of B2B digital marketplaces valued wider product selection, better price comparisons and convenience. Among respondents using these platforms, 76% identified convenience in ordering and delivery as a reason for adoption, while 76% also cited easier supplier comparison.

Although these findings concern businesses purchasing through digital marketplaces, they illustrate a wider expectation: buyers want less friction in routine commercial transactions.

For small suppliers, this can mean ensuring that customers do not need repeated follow-ups to confirm prices, stock availability, delivery schedules or invoice details.

GeM Demonstrates the Role of Digital Procurement

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) provides an example of how digital systems can structure buyer-seller interactions in India.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, procurement from micro and small enterprises through GeM reached ₹2.37 lakh crore in the financial year 2025–26. As of July 30, 2026, the platform had 11,75,001 registered MSMEs. Its digital processes support seller onboarding, bidding, order management and procurement transactions.

While government procurement operates under specific rules and eligibility requirements, GeM demonstrates how digital processes can help buyers and suppliers manage information and transactions within a structured system.

Private B2B suppliers can apply similar principles to their own sales operations, including clear documentation, timely responses and transparent order updates.

After-Sales Service Influences Repeat Business

Customer experience does not end when an order is delivered. Buyers may need technical assistance, replacement parts, invoice corrections, warranty support or help resolving delivery problems.

MSMEs that establish clear complaint-handling processes and communicate realistic resolution timelines can strengthen customer relationships. Maintaining order histories and customer records can also help sales teams respond more effectively to repeat requirements.

Research published in Annals of Operations Research in 2025 examined buyer experience in MSME and SME supplier relationships. The study identified factors including management capabilities, process innovation, digital readiness and data-analytics capabilities as relevant to buyer experience.

The findings reinforce the importance of combining customer service with operational capability and technology. Reliable delivery planning is also important, as  rising logistics costs and delivery challenges can affect fulfilment timelines and repeat business.

Smaller Businesses Begin With Practical Improvements

Improving B2B customer experience does not necessarily require expensive software or a dedicated customer-service department. MSMEs can begin by standardising quotations, maintaining accurate product listings, responding promptly to enquiries and communicating delivery changes before customers need to ask.

Businesses can also use simple customer relationship management tools to track enquiries, follow-ups, complaints and repeat orders. As operations grow, these systems can be connected with inventory, invoicing and order-management software. Timely invoice processing and payment collection can further support dependable supplier relationships, making  faster payments for Indian SMEs through TReDS relevant to the wider business process.

The objective is to make each stage of the buying journey predictable, transparent and easy to navigate.

Outlook: Customer Experience Could Strengthen MSME Competitiveness

As digital procurement expands in India, customer experience is becoming a consideration beyond product quality and price. Buyers increasingly benefit from suppliers who provide clear information, simplify transactions and respond reliably when problems arise.

For Indian MSMEs, the opportunity is to make purchasing as organised as selling. Businesses that combine competitive products with convenient ordering, dependable fulfilment and responsive after-sales service may be better positioned to retain customers and generate repeat B2B orders.
