For small and medium businesses in India, the strategy for the upcoming year is shifting from “get bigger” to “get smarter.”
According to a study, nearly 80% of Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are prioritizing operational efficiency over traditional aggressive expansion. Faced with rising cost pressures, digital skill gaps, and an unpredictable business environment, these companies are choosing to optimize what they have rather than chase raw growth.
The New Priorities, By The Numbers
When asked about their leading business goals for the year ahead, MSMEs ranked their priorities like this:
- 78% — Operational Efficiency: Fine-tuning daily workflows, cutting waste, and maximizing existing resources.
- 71% — Revenue Growth: Boosting sales and turnover.
- 64% — Customer Acquisition: Finding and winning new clients.
This represents a shift toward a more mature phase of business. While making money and getting new customers still matter, businesses are realizing that building long-term competitiveness requires a rock-solid, highly productive foundation first.
Balancing Tech Innovation with Risk
Indian MSMEs are trying to tackle digital upgrades and cost control at the exact same time. The study highlighted a strong push toward modernizing tech stacks:
- 58% are prioritizing digital transformation.
- 57% are focused on cost optimization.
- 55% are eyeing Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption to fuel their next phase of growth.
- 52% are actively strengthening their cybersecurity to protect against rising online risks.
The Roadblocks to Going Digital
Despite these big tech ambitions, putting them into practice isn’t smooth sailing for everyone. Smaller businesses face a few persistent hurdles:
- Skill Shortages: 26% of MSMEs cite a lack of internal digital expertise as their biggest challenge.
- Confusion: 20% struggle just to figure out which technology solutions actually fit their business needs.
- Lack of Guidance: 6% report a complete absence of trusted advisors to guide them through the change.
These roadblocks are exactly where structured advisory and outside tech support can deliver the highest value helping MSMEs bridge the gap between wanting to upgrade and actually doing it successfully.
